This statement can be translated to “Quality of food denotes the quality of blood”
Come, let’s peep in and find out what is the fate of the food that we eat (majority of the time unconsciously!)
Aahara (food) that is ingested gets mixed with the saliva in the oral cavity and goes into the stomach to meet the hydrochloric acid and the other digestive juices secreted from the liver and pancreas. The partially digested food enters the small and large intestine for the further process of digestion and thereby absorption into the bloodstream. So, whatever we eat first gets into the bloodstream. Hence, think more than twice before pushing anything in your mouth, for it goes straight into the stomach and thence to intestines and we would not be able to do anything after that.
Referring back to the pages of Ayurveda granthas (treatises), we can learn the step-wise formation of tissues of the body. Aahara ingested gets into the mukha (oral cavity) and thereby to the aamashaya (stomach) which is housing the ‘Pachaka pitta’ or ‘Jaatharagni’ and Samaana vaata’. These in unison transform the Aahara to Aahara rasa (~ the essential part of the food) and thereby transformed to Rasa dhatu (~ plasma or the non-cellular part of the blood, lymph, interstitial fluids). This Rasa dhatu gets further transformed into Rakta dhatu (Blood tissue system), carrying the nutrients to all other cells and tissues. The quality of blood is thus directly dependent on the quality of food that we eat.
Many people have a habit of taking in tea/coffee on empty stomach. Just understand that this affects the blood tissue first. In the long run, such a person vitiates his blood progressively and may land up in skin issues, excess body heat or loss of appetite.
I encountered a patient who had been practicing regular fasts, approximately for 3 to 4 days a week, she would go on a fast without eating any solid food, instead would take in 6-7 cups of tea. In due course within a span of 3 to 4 years, she landed up herself in gall stones. She had worked hard to vitiate the blood tissue and reach her current health condition.
So, beware of the food that is put in the mouth.
