Updated: Aug 1, 2019

Panchamahabhuta & Health

Every object on the Planet Earth comprises of the Panchamahabhuta (five

elements; viz. earth, water, fire, air and ether) in varying proportions.

The intricate balance between them all is of utmost importance for a

sustained living. The human system also comprises of these five elements, which when maintained in the preferred balance, bestows us with the best of physical

and mental health.

Each one of us have a unique combination of these very 5 elements, the

uniqueness we are all born with. This is referred to as 'Prakruti' of that

individual. Vaata comprises air and ether, Pitta comprises fire and water,

Kapha comprises earth and water. In Ayurveda, we have categorized the 5

elements as the above said Tridoshas (Vaata, Pitta and Kapha).

Understanding the factors causing an aggravation of one or more of these

elements is the first step to good health. Say, for example a person has

Vaata prakruti and if this person exposes him/herself to cold air and

ingests cold food and water often, then he/she is bound to experience an

aggravation in Vaata in the body. Thus, leading to pain in joints, dryness

of skin and scalp, headache, etc. These symptoms will of course be seen in

the individuals of other prakruti too, but with a variable degree.

Striking a delicate balance between the panchamahabhuta is the key for a

sustained healthy life of longeivity.

A light on food that people commonly indulge in. Sprouts and salads are to

be avoided as a main course of meal, especially as a dinner meal. The

element of fire is missing in sprouts and salads, as they are taken raw.

Instead, ether element will be high, since cell division is contributed by

ether element. Ether element inturn aggravates Vaata, leading to the

symptoms aforesaid. And fire element missing in the sprouts and salads

contributes to gradual reduction of the 'Inner Fire' or 'Jaatharagni', or

in simpler words, the digestive capacity gradually decreases over time.

So, it is time to throw light into the 'Panchamahabhuta' composition of

the foods we ingest daily!

Understand Panchamahabhuta, remain healthy.
